Our oldest pipes had an elongated stone bowl set on a perforated base. We fastened a cord through the hole, and attached it to the stem to prevent the bowl from falling off and breaking. The stems were commonly made of wood or hollow bone. These types were later succeeded by pipes with shorter bowls, and beaded stems.
