Birch was a good wood to use to make spoons. There were all kinds of spoons—some were smaller, or longer, and this kind was used to eat something like broth. Wooden spoons don’t get hot when used for broth. The larger ones would be made for removing the fat from certain broths made from beaver, bear, porcupine or fish. That kind of spoon would be used to scoop out the fat and put it into a cup. Then that grease could be eaten.
