The design of our mittens has evolved over time. We shifted from caribou to moose hide for material as caribou became scarce. We also introduced regional variations in styles, and influences from our Inuit neighbours and Scottish fur traders. We used unadorned mittens for everyday wear. Yet, for over two and a half centuries, we traditionally kept our mittens and other accessories decorated with floral designs for special occasions such as hunting.
