We carried our bibles and prayer books in specially made bags, making them easily portable. These were the first kind of books to be printed in Cree syllabics. Syllabics consist of symbols that represent a combination of consonants and vowels. The syllabics alphabet was originally devised by Reverend James Evans at Norway House in 1840, and adapted for the Eeyou dialects by Reverend John Horden in the 1850s.
