Women made rattles. I made them with caribou hide and pellets. A small piece of wood is curved and dried. Once it’s dry, then we would sew it [the hide]. Before sewing it shut, some shotgun pellets are put inside. Not many are used. Once it dried, it would make a sound when shaken. If they weren’t dry, they wouldn’t make a sound.

They were made for children. It was used to put babies to sleep in their swings. When a child was in the swing, we would shake the rattle and rock it back and forth. The child would fall asleep. Sometimes men used the rattle to sing, but they would use it with the drum.
